A sea turtle in Vis

An unexpected visitor

Today, while 3D-scanning the ancient harbour in Vis, we were approached by a very friendly loggerhead turtle. It was a great surprise, as we don’t see sea turtles here very often, especially so close to the shore. The turtle came very close and stayed with us for about 15 min, with a small break for a snack in a deeper water (a sponge, I think). It seemed very interested in interaction. Perhaps, it was doing a bit of “human watching”. 😉

As you can see in the video, the turtle avoids using its right front flipper, so probably it has some kind of problem with it. However, this issue doesn’t seem to disturb the turtle a lot, as we saw it normally swimming and diving down for food.

I reported the encounter of his sea turtle in Vis to the Blue World Institute – an organization working with sea turtles in Croatia. They agreed, that it looks like the turtle is recovering after an old injury, but besides that seems healthy.
